The thought of needles might make you a little nervous, and that is totally fair. Most people do not jump for joy at the idea of someone poking them with sharp things. But acupuncture uses needles that are nothing like the ones you see at the doctor’s office for shots. These needles are hair-thin, so thin that you can barely feel them going into your skin. Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, helping people find relief from all kinds of pain. At Liruma Rehabilitation Centre, we offer acupuncture as part of our full toolkit for healing. Let us walk through what this treatment involves and whether it might help you feel better.
Ancient Chinese medicine explains acupuncture using ideas about energy flowing through your body. This energy travels along paths called meridians, and pain happens when the flow gets blocked. By putting tiny needles into certain spots, the flow of energy can get moving again. Modern science has a different way of explaining why acupuncture seems to work for so many people. The needles trigger your body to release natural pain-killing chemicals called endorphins. These are the same chemicals that give you a runner’s high after a good workout. The needles also increase blood flow to the area, bringing in fresh oxygen and nutrients. So whether you believe in ancient energy or modern chemistry, the result is the same.
If you have never had acupuncture before, you probably have some questions about what it actually feels like. First, you lie down on a comfortable table in a quiet, dimly lit room. Your therapist will ask you where your pain lives and what has been bothering you. Then they will clean a few spots on your skin with a little alcohol wipe. The needles come in sealed, sterile packages, and each one is used only once and then thrown away. Most people feel either nothing at all or just a tiny pinch that fades right away. You will then lie still for about fifteen to thirty minutes while the needles do their work. Many people get so relaxed that they fall right asleep on the table.
Acupuncture is not a cure-all that works for every single health problem out there. But research shows it helps a great deal with certain types of pain and other issues. Back pain and neck pain are two of the most common reasons people come in for acupuncture. Headaches and migraines, especially the kind that keep coming back over and over, often respond very well. People with knee pain from arthritis find that regular sessions help them move with less discomfort. Acupuncture is also great for digestive issues like nausea, bloating, and stomach pain. Women dealing with period pain or hot flashes often find real relief from regular acupuncture sessions. Even anxiety and trouble sleeping can improve when your nervous system learns to calm down.
Acupuncture is not usually a one-and-done kind of treatment, though some people feel better after just one visit. For most folks, the real benefits show up after a series of sessions done over a few weeks. Acute problems that just showed up might need only four to six sessions to feel much better. Chronic issues that have been hanging around for months or years often need ten to fifteen sessions to get real change. The effects are cumulative, meaning each session builds on the last one as your body slowly learns to relax and heal. You might come in once or twice per week at the start of your treatment plan. As you improve, the visits get spread out more, maybe once every week or two. Sticking with the full course is important because stopping too soon can leave you back where you started.
Acupuncture is very safe when done by a trained professional who knows what they are doing. But there are a few situations where we need to be careful or adjust our approach. If you have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners, you can still get acupuncture but with lighter needle work. People with a pacemaker should avoid electrical stimulation that sometimes gets used with the needles. If you are pregnant, many acupuncture points are perfectly safe, but some should be avoided, especially near the belly. Your therapist will ask about your health history before your first session to make sure everything is safe. The most common side effect is just feeling a little tired or relaxed after your session. Some people get a small bruise where a needle went in, which fades in a few days.
One of the best things about acupuncture is that it plays nicely with almost every other type of treatment. You do not have to choose between acupuncture and physiotherapy, you can do both at the same time. At Liruma Rehabilitation Centre, we often use acupuncture alongside other care to help people heal faster. The needles help calm down pain and relax tight muscles so your other treatments work better. For example, getting acupuncture before a physiotherapy session can help you move more easily. Many people find that acupuncture helps their chiropractic adjustments hold longer and feel more comfortable. The needles can also help you sleep better, which gives your body more time to heal on its own. Think of acupuncture as one tool in a big toolbox full of ways to help you feel better.
If you have been curious about acupuncture but nervous to try it, we invite you to come see us. At Liruma Rehabilitation Centre, we start every new patient with a conversation about what is bothering you. We explain everything before we do anything, so there are no surprises along the way. Our therapists are trained and experienced, and we use only sterile, single-use needles for every single patient. You can try a few sessions and see how your body responds before making any big decisions. Many people tell us that acupuncture gave them relief when nothing else seemed to help. It might not work for everyone, but it works for enough people that it is absolutely worth a try. You have been hurting long enough, and you deserve to find out if these tiny needles can help you.
